Fish N Spliffs: UK Roundup- March 9, 2021

The fish is fried and the spliff is lit, as we have a fantastic collection of tracks for this week’s roundup.

After a little hiatus last week, we’re back! Make sure to go check out the Fredo review if you haven’t already. But without further ado, let’s dive into some of the best tracks I’ve heard over the last week.

V9-Do It

The Homerton Sensei himself, who truly is one of the greatest personalities in all of drill, V9, is back with another great tune. It’s hard and aggressive, while somehow being damn near meditative at the same time. It’s a bit more 808 heavy, but it reminds me of some of the beats Blanco has rapped over in the past. We love the pro-consent bars V9 drops here too.

Trizzac- New Testament

Zone 2’s Trizzac came through with a similar track to V9’s “Do It,” as he chose to rap over a much calmer instrumental here. He talks about turning his opps to angels on the chorus, and the beat features some really nice, rather angelic vocal samples throughout. Seeing his progression as an artist has been a real treat. I’m also damn excited to hear the absolute BANGER he teased at the end of this video.

TKorStretch- Visions

TKorStretch shows of a keen ability to seamlessly slide back and forth between a wavy auto-tuned flow and a much more straight-forward drill flow. He also flexes some extremely unique vocals on the chorus here. This is just different from the majority of other drill tracks, and I for one am here for it.

No Tourists- Like Lava

The boys from Toronto are back with another completely unique track. The group, consisting of artists Deelo Avery, Kafayé, Keynes Woods, Lan’do and James Wesson, have yet to drop two songs that sound alike. Here, we get a helping of off-kilter, breathy flows over a smooth, atmospheric instrumental. While some artists tinker with different sounds in an attempt to find their “best” sound, the boys of No Tourists sound right at home on something that bangs as hard as “Dumbo,” or over a beat that is as spacey as this one. Their ability to meld different sounds together give them a level of chameleonic talent that should have all of us looking forward to their new Ultraviolet EP that drops next month.

Kyze- Few Kind Words

Kyze is anything but kind on this new track. It’s more of a rap banger, and his wordplay is pretty damn sharp here. I wish you all could see the expression on my face when I first heard him rap, “Treasure hunter, might open a man’s chest.” Giggs wasn’t lying when he spoke kindly about Kyze on his last album. This is hard.

Screama and Chappo- Bestfriends

The energy on this one is crazy! I’m new to Screama and Chappo, but this acts as a great introduction to what they’re all about. The chorus feels like a nice little interpolation of Young Thug’s “Bestfriend,” and the flows from both artists are sharp as hell. Two more guys that I’ll definitely be looking out for in the future.

Skengdo, AM, Lil Rass, BM, Mini, Rack5, TY and MskumPlugged In

It wouldn’t be a complete helping of Fish N Spliffs if we didn’t get some fire from Fumez’s studio. This is the most energetic I’ve ever heard AM, and it is cool to see all of the various Youtube reactors in the studio as well.

Kwengface- Plugged In

Wait, is this a double helping of Fumez this week? You’re goddamn right it is. Kwengface’s energy is untouchable, and his skippy flow is as on point as ever. He absolutely murders both of the beats in this freestyle. He’s had a great 2021 so far, with this freestyle and “Petrol Station” with PS Hitsquad being released so far.

Special Spliff of the Week

Ramz- Barking

Now that the sun’s actually out, and the weather is starting to warm up, this track feels fitting. Easy going, breezy and smooth. I can see why it’s the most viewed song on GRM Daily’s YouTube page. Ramz may be a bit plagued by his first track being so damn big, but it’s an undeniably great song. Something a little more easy going as we rap up this week’s roundup.

Thanks as always to everyone who checks this out, and I’m hoping to have another album review out at some point later this week. Much love and I hope everyone is staying safe and sane.
