Fish N Spliffs: UK Roundup- January 25th, 2021

It was a slow week in the UK, but I still found plenty of great music to share with you all!

Let’s get right into some of the best tracks from the UK that I heard over the last week.

M Huncho- Overpriced

Huncho moved passed the unfortunate situation in which someone leaked a picture of him maskless in the studio and gave us a real solid, classic M Huncho tune. He does some cool things with his delivery and cadence. It’s just so effortless for this man. He teases another track at the end, so it might be time for him to be shifting into album mode!

Charlie Sloth, Gunna, Abra Cadabra, and Kelvyn Colt- Get It

This is got to be one of the most unexpected collabs I’ve seen in some time. Abra is solid as always, and Gunna’s verse is cool. But holy shit, Kelvyn Colt absolutely CARRIED this track. Kelvyn has been bubbling just beneath the surface in Germany for years now, so it’s awesome to see him not only be on a track with artists of these levels, but to honestly outshine all of them. Oh, and consider the fact that he’s the only one on the track that isn’t a native English speaker. Wild.

Chuks and Rose9- Sasuke

Well, looks like I’ve been sleeping on some of the other most impressive artists coming out of Ireland. Pretty sure I heard some shots at A92 in there too? Just two more artists that fit into the UK drill scene seamlessly, and outperform some guys that have much bigger followings.

2Smokeyy- Corn

The beat here is just too nasty. Great production matched with Smokeyy’s solid bars. This is one that I’ve been loving more and more with every listen.

I wasn’t able to dive into as many tracks from new artists this week, so I think we’re going to have an extended Special Spliff section this week. Here is a section of some influential, or just flat out great UK tracks that I think more than worth checking out:

Bis, Blanco, Active, MizOrMac- Kennington Where It Started

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCJ7nWfT8-w

The track that put Harlem Spartans on the map. The original video just got taken down about four years after originally debuting, so let’s hope this one lasts long enough for you all to watch. RIP Bis. He had a whole country asking the question: “When gang pull up, are you gonna back your bredrin?”

Dave- Screwface Capital

No video here, but I beg you to just listen to the goddamn wordplay here. Dave is unbelievable.

Section Boyz- Trappin Ain’t Dead

Section Boyz- Lock Arff

Section Boyz and Skepta- Worst

Let’s take some time for a little Section/Smoke Boyz appreciation. They’re a classic case of a group that was massive and influential at their height, but their overall popularity has wained as the scene has evolved. You can even throw me into that group, since I completely forgot they were releasing their final album late last year.

So that does it for this week’s roundup! I’ve got a few albums I want to get caught up on that I missed from late last year (*cough* like that Smoke Boyz album I just mentioned). I just didn’t have the chance to dive into them as much as I would like, especially while I was working on that year end list, so some records kind of fell through the cracks. I’ll do a similar roundup style post for some of those!

Additionally, I’m hoping to do more of my “Retrospective” pieces, where I talk about an older album that I’ve either rediscovered recently, or that has had a fair bit of influence on me and my musical taste. Luckily, I found the perfect album to get that trend started this year, and it’s a bit of a curveball in relation to majority of what I’ve written about so far. 2021 is about working on branching out the blog content, and what better place to start than with a fantastic UK album from the great year of 2005. Be on the look out for that!

As always, much love to everyone and thanks for reading, you wonderful people.
